MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings has been working on reforestation in Indonesia since 2005.
Their efforts will take six years, lasting until 2011, and are focused on reforestation of approximately 300 hectares in Indonesia's Paliyan Wildlife Sanctuary. Their objective is to restore and revitalize the forest, and also prevent or reduce the number of landslides and other natural disasters.
Sumitomo Forestry is providing consultation for these efforts, from planning through to actual reforestation. In consideration of the local ecosystem, we have selected indigenous tree species for planting. We are also using agroforestry(*1) to help financially support local residents.
(*1) A combination of reforestation and cultivating agricultural crops for short-term income, designed to improve the lives of residents while the trees are growing.
